Counselling

A safe space to talk,
understand and move forward

Sometimes we know exactly why we're struggling.

Other times, it's much harder to explain.

You may feel anxious, overwhelmed or emotionally exhausted. Perhaps something from your past keeps finding its way into your present. You may be grieving, struggling within a relationship, questioning your self-worth, or simply feeling that somewhere along the way you've lost touch with yourself.

Sometimes there isn't one particular reason at all.

You just know that something doesn't feel right.

You don't have to wait until you reach breaking point to talk to someone.

At Orchid Room Therapy, I offer compassionate, person-centred and trauma-informed counselling for adults and young people aged 12+, from my private counselling space in Great Wakering, Southend-on-Sea.

Online counselling is also available via Microsoft Teams.

What is Person-Centred Counselling?

At the heart of person-centred counselling is the belief that you are the expert in your own life.

My role isn't to tell you what you should do, judge the choices you've made or give you a list of solutions.

Instead, I walk alongside you.

Our therapeutic relationship is built upon empathy, authenticity and unconditional positive regard, creating a confidential and non-judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences at your own pace.

Sometimes simply saying something out loud for the first time can be incredibly powerful.

As counselling develops, you may begin to recognise patterns, understand where certain feelings or behaviours originate, develop greater self-awareness and find new ways of relating to yourself and the people around you.

There is no predetermined route through counselling.

We begin with you.

A Trauma-Informed Approach

Our experiences can shape us in ways we don't always recognise.

Something that happened many years ago can continue to influence how safe we feel, how we respond to situations, the relationships we form, the boundaries we set and even the way we speak to ourselves.

This is why I work from a trauma-informed perspective.

Rather than simply focusing on “What's wrong?”, we can gently become curious about what you have experienced and how those experiences may have shaped you.

We don't need to rush into painful memories or talk about anything before you feel ready.

Safety, trust and your pace come first.

How I Can Help

People come to counselling for many different reasons.

You don't need a diagnosis, and you don't need to know exactly what you need help with before contacting me.

I support people experiencing:

  • Trauma and difficult childhood experiences
  • Inner child and childhood-related patterns
  • Grief, bereavement and loss
  • Anxiety, stress and emotional overwhelm
  • Low self-esteem, confidence and self-worth
  • Relationship difficulties and boundaries
  • Feeling stuck, lost or disconnected from yourself
  • Life changes and transitions
  • Emotional regulation
  • Patterns of behaviour you don't fully understand
  • Neurodivergent experiences
  • Caring responsibilities and always being the one who holds everything together

You may also come to counselling simply because you want to understand yourself better.

Your reason for seeking support doesn't have to fit neatly into a category.

Understanding the Past Without Living in It

Sometimes we find ourselves repeating patterns without understanding why.

People-pleasing. Finding it difficult to say no. Fear of rejection or abandonment. Struggling to trust. Feeling responsible for everybody else's emotions. Being incredibly hard on yourself. Feeling that you're never quite good enough.

These patterns don't necessarily appear from nowhere.

Sometimes they developed much earlier in life as ways of gaining acceptance, maintaining relationships, feeling safe or coping with difficult experiences.

Counselling can give us the opportunity to gently explore these connections.

Where appropriate, our work may include exploring childhood experiences and inner child approaches, helping you understand the younger parts of yourself that may still carry fear, hurt or unmet emotional needs.

This isn't about blaming the past.

It's about understanding your story with greater compassion so that you can have more choice in how you move forward.

Grief, Bereavement & Loss

Grief doesn't follow a timetable.

It can bring sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, confusion, relief, loneliness and emotions that can be difficult to make sense of.

And grief isn't limited to bereavement.

We can grieve relationships, identities, health, opportunities, stages of life or a future we thought we were going to have.

Counselling doesn't aim to hurry you towards “moving on”.

It gives your loss somewhere to be spoken about, remembered, understood and felt.

Sometimes grief doesn't need fixing. It needs somewhere it is allowed to exist.

What Will Counselling With Me Feel Like?

I understand that walking into a counselling room for the first time can feel daunting.

You might wonder what you're supposed to say, where you're meant to start, or whether what you're experiencing is “bad enough” to need counselling.

There is no right way to begin.

When you arrive at Orchid Room Therapy, my aim is for you to feel welcomed and comfortable.

You can settle into a comfortable chair, have a warm drink, take a blanket if you'd like one, and have 50 minutes that belong entirely to you.

You don't have to arrive with your thoughts organised.

There may be tears.

There may be silence.

There may also be laughter.

Some sessions may explore difficult experiences. Others may involve recognising something about yourself that suddenly makes sense. Sometimes you may simply need somewhere to put down everything you've been carrying.

All of it is welcome.

You can come as you are.

Confidentiality & Feeling Safe

Counselling provides a confidential space where you can speak openly about what you're experiencing.

I understand that some people arrive in therapy carrying things they have never told anyone before.

You won't be expected to disclose anything before you feel ready.

Building a therapeutic relationship takes time, and I believe trust should be developed, not demanded.

There are some circumstances where confidentiality may need to be broken, particularly where there are serious safeguarding concerns. I will explain confidentiality and its limits clearly when we begin working together, so you understand how your information is treated.

Counselling for Young People Aged 12+

I also offer person-centred counselling for young people aged 12 and over.

Being a teenager can bring enormous change, expectations and pressure, sometimes alongside experiences that are difficult to talk about with the people closest to you.

Counselling can provide a separate, confidential space where a young person can explore what is happening for them without feeling judged or expected to have all the answers.

My previous professional experience includes supporting children and young people with learning disabilities and working with young carers, giving me an understanding of the importance of meeting each young person as an individual.

Appropriate consent, confidentiality and safeguarding are central to my work with young people.

Taking the First Step

Reaching out can sometimes feel like the hardest part.

That's why I offer a free initial telephone conversation before you decide whether you'd like to begin counselling with me.

This isn't a counselling session or a formal assessment.

It's simply a friendly, informal conversation.

You can tell me a little about what has brought you to counselling, ask any questions you have and get a sense of whether you feel comfortable talking with me.

There is no obligation to book afterwards.

Finding the right counsellor matters.
